Double Hot Springs is about 6 miles north of Black Rock Point over a very rough dirt road. A car will not make it, you need an SUV. You can get back out on the Playa at Black Rock Spring and head north to the next Playa road and turn left back into the shore which will bring you to Double Hot. But be careful of soft ground. Of all the larger hot springs in the Black Rock area Double Hot is the hottest. The name comes from the fact it has double pools of opposing nature. One is a black pool of extremely hot water. The other is a multi-colored creation of clear beauty. Only thing the two have in common besides a linking channel is they are both deadly hot. The BLM and others have placed a fence and warning signs to get the fact of reality to the visitors. Be extremely careful around these two pools. People have died here. Early immerge records tell of the deaths of people and animals who have slipped off the grassy edges and into the boiling hot water. Even as late as 2000, Lisa O'Shea died a few weeks after she jumped in to Double Hot to save two dogs. A fella named Andy Crowell survived slipping in, though he had second and third-degree burns over 80 % of his body. - Stay away from the edges. Several unique things are at Double Hot. No one seems to know why the one pool is black but its water runs a small channel into the clear pool without affecting its coloration. It then runs another channel out into the nearby marsh lands, cooling as it goes.
